Brief Network Outage in CV – CLOSED

The University of Virginia has notified us that there will be a brief (~5 minutes or less) network outage between NRAO/Charlottesville and the internet:

  • When: Wednesday, March 11, 2015; 11:00 PM US/EDT (2015-03-12 03:00 UT)
  • What: network between NRAO and UVa – and hence the internet at large.
    • CV-GB and CV-NM WAN links will be unaffected.
      • High speed Internet tunnels between any site (GB, NM, JAO) and CV will be affected.  (If you don’t know what this means, you’re probably not using the tunnels).
    • GB internet access will be affected, other than for services using the new 10GB network link.
    • NM internet access will NOT be affected.
  • Why: Software upgrade to UVa’s core router at Gilmer Hall

Due to the late night timing, and the expected briefness of the service outage, the vast majority of our users will be unaffected.

NRAO (Charlottesville) Network Downtime – Resolved

UPDATE: Feb 5, 2015 22:15 US/EST: All systems needing a reboot have been done; minor work remains on scattered cluster nodes, and two internal but non-critical servers.

UPDATE: Feb 5, 2015 21:00 US/EST: network maintenance has been done; cluster restoration and required reboots are in process. public.nrao.edu is accessible.

UPDATE: Feb 5, 2015 19:26 US/EST: work on the Exchange Server has concluded.

On Thursday, February 5th, 2015 between 7:00pm and 11:00pm , the core network switch in the NRAO Charlottesville computer room will be down for necessary preventive maintenance.  During this time, some (but not all) services operated out of Charlottesville may be inaccessible for some periods of time.  We are using this opportunity to apply necessary reboots to several servers.

The ALMA science helpdesk will not be affected.

The Exchange server will be minimally affected (~15 minutes downtime).

  • www.nrao.edu
  • science.nrao.edu
  • info.nrao.edu
  • public.nrao.edu
  • almascience.nrao.edu (but almascience.eso.org and almascience.nao.ac.jp unaffected)
  • library.nrao.edu
  • find.nrao.edu
  • safe.nrao.edu
  • bos.nrao.edu
  • listmgr.nrao.edu

Many internal services will also be affected, including NAASC Cluster nodes, Lustre, Filer shares, Unix CV Mail Servers, Sharepoint, and a few others.

We will make every effort to minimize the actual downtime, but please do not count on anything served from NRAO/Charlottesville being accessible during this time.
